The project is conceived as an information and pastoral centre serving parishioners and visitors to St. Joseph Cathedral, accommodating a reception area, bookstore, and gift shop. Situated within a highly symbolic setting, the proposal extends beyond functional requirements to address the relationship between old and new, while responding to the religious character of the site.

Several design proposals were developed, all based on the architectural principles established through the previous two projects. Ultimately, the new client—a younger and more progressive priest—chose to continue this direction. This did not mean repeating earlier ideas, however, as the project introduces a number of important refinements.

tdt_shrine temple
The temple is positioned along the parish’s pilgrimage route, connecting the cathedral, the temple, and the surrounding water landscape to form a sacred north–south axis. Visitors progress through a carefully choreographed sequence of spatial experiences: from the enclosed cathedral, to the open landscape, to the compact and introverted temple, before finally arriving at an open natural setting beyond. This alternating rhythm of enclosure and openness reinforces both movement and the symbolic extension of the sacred axis toward nature.

Our first project was realised in the remote mountainous region of Northwest Vietnam, deep within the villages of local ethnic minority communities. The greatest challenge did not stem from limited financial resources, but rather from the availability of local construction capacity and the organisational conditions that had to be understood and incorporated into the design proposal from the outset

Kinh Bac has long been recognized as one of the cradles of Vietnamese civilization. As an early center of Buddhism and the homeland of the Ly Dynasty, it has played a significant role in shaping the nation’s cultural and historical identity. These values remain deeply embedded in the collective memory and cultural landscape of the region.
The project draws upon this historical and spiritual foundation to develop a contemporary architectural expression. Its formal composition reflects ideas of continuity, integration, and collective identity, while establishing a dialogue between cultural heritage and the aspirations of the present.
