as part of an ongoing body of work exploring ancillary and extension structures within existing religious environments, hien_02 is the latest project designed by lêstudioarchitects for ham long parish, archdiocese of hanoi.
the project accommodates two complementary functions: a large canopy providing additional outdoor seating for liturgical gatherings, and a parish bookstore housing religious publications and devotional objects.
despite its modest scale, the project was conceived not only as a functional intervention but also as an exploration of how contemporary architectural language might be introduced into sacred artistic settings. in doing so, it seeks to negotiate the relationship between the continuity of tradition and the conditions of contemporary life.
together with the pilgrimage information center at st. joseph’s cathedral, hanoi (hien_01), and several related projects, hien_02 forms part of a broader architectural inquiry that has gradually been tested through construction and use. these projects contribute to an evolving approach toward ancillary religious buildings within the context of the archdiocese of hanoi.
