exp_pavilion of vietnam world expo 2025
The proposal for the Vietnam Pavilion at World Expo Osaka 2025 was developed through two approaches: bamboo and the spirit of traditional Vietnamese architecture. Both reinterpret Vietnamese identity through a contemporary architectural language, emphasizing the relationship between people, community, and nature.
Bamboo
Bamboo is deeply rooted in Vietnamese life and culture. It symbolizes integrity, solidarity, resilience, and adaptability. Closely associated with villages, architecture, everyday objects, landscapes, poetry, and folklore, bamboo forms part of both Vietnam’s material culture and collective memory.
Rather than treating bamboo merely as a material or decorative image, the proposal explores its underlying principle: individual elements joining together to form a strong and enduring structure. The pavilion thus represents a flexible, cohesive community capable of adapting to contemporary change.
Echo of Vietnamese history
Instead of directly reproducing historical forms, this proposal reinterprets two essential elements: the communal courtyard and the veranda of the communal house.
The courtyard becomes an open central space for exhibitions, gatherings, and community interaction. The veranda forms a transitional zone between inside and outside, responding to the climate while evoking shelter and a close relationship with nature.
The spatial organization also reflects the Vietnamese concept of the Three Realms—Heaven, Earth, and Humanity. Human beings occupy a central position without dominating nature, existing instead within a balanced and interconnected whole.
Together, the two proposals present a Vietnam that is resilient like bamboo, connected through communal space, and open to the future. The architecture does not imitate tradition but carries its essential values forward through contemporary design.
